Referees and suspensions in the NHL

With the Olympiques out early and the Habs not making the dance, the hockey in me had to watch some live hockey game, so I ended going to all 3 home games of the SENS.  Off course Ottawa is not my team, so I went there for the simple pleasure of watching hockey.  I'm glad I did because it confirmed a few points ive been mentionning on the web in the last few years.

I had not watch a live hockey without cheering for a team in years, yet I left for at least 2 of the 3 games puzzled by some calls I witnessed.

Hockey has change so much, that referees are confused like there's no tomorrow and to make matters worst Brendan Shanahan ( ex hockey player) is upstairs handing out suspensions like a gum ball machine spits its stuff.

I don't want to start giving out examples and doing a pros and con list of what they did when or where.  I will say this though, I find it very hard to believe that that referees, players, coaches, GM, Shanahan and the rest of the parade are all on the same page when I here coaches and players from both teams complain as to...."what the hell happened out there".

Quick exemple...Ottawa and New York last night.

In the second period the referees called a few stinkers to the Sens, thus making them play 3 against 5...the Rangers scored and won the game because of those calls eventually.  Moving on to the third period, the wind had completely changed as to what the referees we're calling, for some reason the Rangers we're now getting the cheap call....they even went has far as crediting a goal to Chris Neil, one that was clearly kicked in.  Are these guys wathing the game or are they clearly confused has to what to do out there.  I'll tell you one thing, it's ridiculous and it's getting even worst by the game.

Raffi Torres was suspended for 25 games for a hit that would not even have gotten a 2 minutes 10 years ago (when Shanahan was still playing by the way).  Then Chris Neil creams Boyle a few days later in a situation similar and he gets nothing...WTF.  You know me, i'll defend both players all the time, I find both hits to be legal, off course Torres's one is a bit harder to defend but it's not dramatic to the point of having a 25 games difference and putting the guy (Torres) in a situation where his life is affeted by it.  Like Boyle, Hossa should of protected himself, like Boyle Hossa should of know that a hard hitter was on the ice, like Boyle it was a late hit.  Those are the things Shany should watch for before handing out suspension...not "was the guy hit to the head"? or "did he leep of the ice"?  By evaluting the wrong thing your making hockey players think differently on the ice thus changing the mentality of the game and it's clearly not working.  Players will be players and referees will be referees...you can control logical rules a lot easier then controling over 700 players in the NHL today or the next thousands of players that are coming in the years to come.  Every time they change a rule they create another problem in a player somewhere.  Suspensions, good ones or ridiculous ones (like the Torres one) are not doing anyone any good, players get frustrated, team lose talent, fans gets a poor product and this list could go on and on.  BRING BACK THE INSTIGATOR!!!

It seams to me like a basic offside and icing is a situation in these recent playoffs!!!  Another thing that burns me up is how many times during the course of a game that referees are in the way.  I was against having a 4 referee on the ice because I simply didn't see the point of it and really what good has come from it?!?!?  Calls are even more ridiculous then even, so basicly your just adding another guy out there with a confused mind...for a hockey play the result is that someone else is on the ice taking space and that's it!

Mike Babcock of the Detroit Red Wings said is best when Shea Weber smashed Henrik Zettenberg head in the glass last week.

Babcock: "We had a problem, the league didn't do anything, so we took care of it"!!!

That says it right there, that coaches and players can solve situations on the ice themselves and of all the stupidities that have resulted in suspensions in this years playoff, the Weber one should of clearly merit a suspension.  I hate when they say that a marked player pays more dearly when commiting an offence on the ice, because if you don't suspend players that usually don't commit suspendable actions when they do, how in the hell do they become marked players??!?!?!?!

This was my two cents about the subject, a lot of people might disagree with it and that's fine....but if you want real hockey, stop asking the ref's to robot and stop trying to make the game of hockey something it's not....if you don't like what it is, don't change it...it might just not be for you, that's all!!!

Keep dropping your gloves kids, it's part of the game!!!
